Behind The Scenes With Brianna Cox Photography – Welcoming Jameson Peter

I’m back from my blogging hiatus (maternity leave) to introduce you to my greatest joy, Jameson Peter and share a bit about my journey into motherhood so far.

These past few months have been a whirlwind of emotions and family milestones, and what better time to share my birth story than right after celebrating my first Mother’s Day.
1birthstoryJameson was born at 7:04 pm on January 28th, weighing in at 6 lbs 15 oz and was 19.5 inches long. He graced us with his presence after 8 hours of labor…

Eight hours is apparently on the shorter end for first time deliveries, but let me assure you that it was far from easy. After a miscommunication with the nurses, I had to wait 2 hours between my Pitocin dose (which increases the strength – and pain – of contractions) and my epidural. I then experienced what it feels like when the epidural misses its mark on the first try. I felt everything.

It didn’t get much better from there. Due to the Pitocin I developed a fever, which caused my baby’s heartrate to spike. I had a panic attack worrying about him, so they had to put me on oxygen for the final three hours. My husband Peter and my Mother were by my side through the whole experience. They prayed with me and helped calm me down and focus on pushing (and in case you’re wondering, they were the ones who took turns with my camera, taking pictures throughout the birth so we can remember this experience forever!)

Finally, as my labor was nearing its end, my doctor was late returning to the delivery room, resulting in our nurse suddenly shouting “STOP PUSHING!” as Jameson decided to make his arrival a bit earlier than everyone expected. The nurse held his head in place until the Dr. came back in to finish delivering him.

Of course every second of pain was worth it. My new baby was placed right on my chest, with an adorable little pout on his face. We tried out different names, and he stopped crying right away when I called him Jameson. We knew right then and there he was Jameson. We like to say he picked his own name.

Then, after Peter cut the cord, he starting singing to Jameson. He had sung the old Bing Crosby song “Count Your Blessings” to my belly every night during the last trimester of my pregnancy, and as soon as he started singing in the delivery room Jameson stopped crying and looked up at his Daddy (see picture below). Needless to say I was crying quite a bit by this point.

Having these first moments meeting our son captured on film is so incredibly special to us. I’m SO thankful to Peter my Mom and MY DR. for all being part of the delivery and still taking pictures!

After a difficult delivery and a sleepless night, I couldn’t help taking pictures of my own and I haven’t put the camera down ever since… 😉

Our friend and fellow photographer Caryn Scanlan who also photographed our maternity session photographed some of Jameson’s newborn portraits (The two photos above and the below right photo are by Caryn Scanlan. The below left photo is by my other friend and photographer, Carissa Potterton)
jp1I can’t wait to share my love for the photographic arts with my son and teach him everything I know, just like I did with his Daddy who now loves photography as much as I do.

Jameson has been a good sport already dressing up for fun photo shoots! Between being a leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day (still sporting that sweet little pout he had when he was first born) and being a handsome little bunny in Mr. McGregor’s Garden for Easter, he’s on his way to being Mommy’s little photo assistant.

Being a new Mom is emotionally and physically exhausting but 1000% worth it all. This little love has filled a hole in my heart I never knew was there. I have never known so much joy, worry, exhaustion and feelings of absolute happiness all at once, until now.

As I prepare to embark on another busy wedding season (which I’m very excited about), I can’t help but feel blessed to know I have this little peanut to come home to, to love and teach and kiss and cuddle.
